How is testing and tagging done?
Testing and tagging of electrical equipment can be done in 5 steps:
- Inspection: During the inspection, the first thing that should be considered is for the asset to match its description. If otherwise, then the problem should be detected. The asset should be visually checked for obvious wear or damage. Examples include:
- Lost screws
- Lost safety covers
- Bare wires
- Teared plugs
- Defaced or missing warning labels or serial numbers
- Cracked housing
- Testing: Electrical appliances are comprehensively tested for dangers, polarity, insulation, voltage leakage and earth continuity using a portable appliance tester (PAT). Mostly they are not visible to the naked eye.
- Testing Result: PAT will then provide the relevant result of each test
- Tagging: The device will then be labelled with a test and tag sticker after it is passed. The sticker will indicate ID number, pulse logo and phone number, name and phone number of operator, date and time, along with next test due date.
- Detailed Report: At last, a detailed report of your device will be provided to you, showing the status of your electrical device. An asset management register can also utilize this report.

Who should do testing and tagging?
Electrical appliances of mining, construction and demolition industries should be tested and tagged after every 3 months. It is because the harsh nature of the industry will wear the equipment at a faster rate. Though for other workplaces, test and tag is not a legislative procedure. But if a worker is to get hurt from the untested appliance, the employer will be held accountable. Therefore, regular testing of electrical equipment is necessary.
Who can test and tag electrical appliances?
People often misunderstand that only electricians are responsible for testing and tagging. However, in Australia, any proficient person can do test and tag. Any person who has undertaken a test and tag course and has gained skills and knowledge on using a PAT is considered proficient and can perform testing and tagging.
Type of equipment to be tested and tagged:
Any device with a removable plug that is not of low voltage (should not exceed 50V) and has a flexible cable can be tested and tagged. Normally, electrical equipment is classified into two types:
- Class-I is composed of earthed equipment, i.e. toasters, iron or kettles.
- Class-II is composed of double insulated equipment usually labelled with either word “Double Insulation” or with the symbols (square within a square), i.e. hair dryers and mostly electric drills.
