AS/NZS 3760 2010

In Australia, the standard that test and tagging is held towards in regards to portable appliance testing is AS/NZS 3760:2010. This standard includes the safety testing for single and 3-phase items, as well as RCD testing. Any item that is currently in service, returning to service or available for external use must test in accordance with the standard.

The Australian Standard makes recommendations from test and tag frequencies, to inspections and record keeping. If equipment in a workplace is not safe, it can cause an accident which can lead the employer or employees to be liable. Under the standard, each appliance must undergo the following tests:

  • Visual inspections
  • Insulation resistance
  • Earth continuity
  • Polarity
  • Earth leakage

In addition to correct testing methods, the standard also recommends the record keeping of appliances to follow suit:

  • A tag on each item containing the date, item, who performed the test, status of test, and due date for the next test
  • A complete list of all test items and results
  • Any faulty items or repair actions noted and shared with primary contact

The frequency of test and tagging is somewhat of a grey area, each business may alter the timeline to suit their needs. The Local Guys works in conjunction with the frequencies recommended by the standard. This can be seen in the table below.
